SEO and market research firm First Page Sage published its October 2026 agentic commerce statistics on October 22, one of the first attempts to size how often U.S. shoppers actually let an AI agent finish a purchase. The study combines a panel of 4,936 U.S. online shoppers, anonymized order data from 43 ecommerce, travel and insurance brands, and 18,400 shopping prompts run across the major AI platforms, normalized against U.S. Census ecommerce totals.

Highlights#

  • Agent-completed orders rose from 0.27% to 0.68% of U.S. ecommerce orders between Q2 and Q3 2026, the largest quarterly jump in the firm's dataset. The increase is concentrated in the last three weeks of September, and 71% of it traces to Meta Muse, which launched September 8 and completes purchases through Stripe Link, Shop Pay and PayPal.
  • 61.4% of U.S. online shoppers now use AI to research purchases, but only 6.8% have ever let an agent complete a checkout. Fully autonomous purchases with no approval sit at 1.3% of shoppers, outnumbered more than five to one by checkouts that require a human sign-off.
  • ChatGPT hosts 41.3% of AI-assisted shopping sessions but completes only 9.4% of agent purchases, having moved most buyers to the merchant's own site in March 2026. Amazon Alexa for Shopping and Meta Muse together complete 61.5%. Claude shoppers place the largest average orders at $141.
  • Merchants inside an agent's checkout partnership saw purchases complete at 1.4 to 3.8 times the rate of comparable merchants outside it. Muse's direct retail partners (Walmart, Gap, Sephora, Wayfair, Best Buy) saw the biggest lift at 3.8x.
  • Groceries, event tickets and beauty products are the most delegated categories. Electronics is the most researched category at 68.1% of shoppers, yet only 5.2% of them let an agent complete the buy.

Why it matters#

Adoption is real but thin, and it runs through formal checkout partnerships rather than open agent-to-agent rails. For a trust layer like A2AWire, the takeaway is that merchants outside the big platforms' partner lists need their own path to agent buyers, and escrow plus verifiable reputation is how they get one without a network deal.
