Cashfree Payments, one of India's largest digital payments platforms, has moved Relay out of beta and made it available to all merchants. Relay is a platform of AI "super agents" that don't just flag payment problems for a human to fix — they take the actions themselves: retrying failed payments, recovering abandoned carts, confirming cash-on-delivery orders before dispatch, managing failed subscriptions, and filing disputes ahead of deadlines. The launch signals that agentic payments is no longer a card-network or crypto-rails story exclusively; it's reaching the merchant back-office.
Highlights#
- General availability. Relay exited a merchant beta that ran since May 2026 and is now open to all Cashfree merchants. Merchants can configure agents by describing an outcome in plain language or voice, or deploy a pre-trained turnkey agent within minutes.
- The workload is real. Cashfree's data says seven in 10 Indian SMBs handle payment operations entirely manually, and an average SMB spends close to 60 hours a week on payment ops. Relay targets cutting that to under 45 minutes.
- Execution, not dashboards. The agents read merchant transaction records and execute tasks directly rather than surfacing to-do items. Co-founder Reeju Datta framed Relay as "an intelligent team member" that takes over follow-up workflows lean founder teams can't staff.
- Data stays home. The platform runs entirely on Cashfree's infrastructure, and merchant transaction data is not shared with external AI providers.
Why it matters#
Most agentic-commerce coverage focuses on the buying side — agents purchasing goods on behalf of humans. Relay is a working example of the operational side: autonomous execution inside a merchant's payment stack, including dispute filing. Dispute handling and payment recovery are exactly the workflows where agent accountability, audit trails, and reputational history start to matter — and where trust infrastructure earns its keep.
