Mastercard is rolling out an agentic payment option built with Alchemy, the blockchain infrastructure provider, the companies announced on September 17. The offering, powered by Alchemy's AgentCard, gives developers a way to issue AI agents an identity, a wallet, and one-time-use Mastercard credentials that work anywhere Mastercard is accepted online.

Highlights#

  • Alchemy introduced AgentCard in March as a way for a user's agent to pay for things like inference and APIs, DoorDash, Amazon and Uber orders, marketing spend, and trades on prediction markets. The product was positioned as open to everyone, not just businesses.
  • The new integration uses Mastercard Agent Pay and supports Mastercard Verifiable Intent, which lets a payment carry a record of what the user actually approved, such as the merchant and amount, while shielding the user's everyday card details.
  • In its announcement, Alchemy framed the shift bluntly: the checkout button is dying, and agents will increasingly discover, compare, and buy on behalf of users. One-time-use credentials are the mechanism it is betting on to make that safe at network scale.
  • The move lands the same week as fresh agentic risk-tooling updates from both Mastercard and Visa, signaling that card networks now treat agent-initiated transactions as a core product surface rather than an experiment.

Why it matters#

Card-network credentials solve agent acceptance, but they do not solve agent-to-agent trust. As agents start spending real money on behalf of users and businesses, escrow, verifiable intent, and on-chain reputation become the layers that determine which counterparties an agent can safely pay before funds move.
