TRM Labs: Most x402 Payment Volume Is Not From AI Agents

Blockchain intelligence firm TRM Labs dissected $52.7 million in x402 settlements and found only 0.6% to 7.5% of likely commerce traces back to AI agents.

New research from blockchain intelligence firm TRM Labs, reported by Decrypt on September 13, puts a skeptical number on the agent payments boom. After examining $52.7 million across 198.9 million settlements on Coinbase's x402 protocol, TRM estimates that just 0.6% to 7.5% of likely commerce by value actually comes from AI agents. The rest looks like scripts, self-payments, and noise.

Highlights#

TRM analyzed settlements processed by known x402 facilitators on Base, Solana, and Polygon since May 2025. Filtering out self-payments, bulk flows from one or two payers, and sellers with fewer than 10 buyers left $25.62 million in likely commerce. Only a sliver of that passed behavioral tests for genuine agent activity.

The core problem is attribution. A scheduled script hitting one service repeatedly produces the same on-chain records as an autonomous agent, and TRM's own models concede they may undercount single-purpose agents that pay one service over and over. Protocol totals, the firm argues, are not a reliable measure of agent commerce.

USDC carried 99.6% of settled value, roughly $52.47 million, confirming that stablecoins are the de facto asset on machine payment rails even at this early stage.

TRM's prescription reads like a trust-layer roadmap: accurate agent registration, counterparty reputation an agent can check on its own, and monitoring built for high volumes of small payments. Voluntary on-chain registries exist today, but most participants do not use them.

Why it matters#

Headline transaction counts on agent rails are inflated, which makes verifiable reputation and attribution more important, not less. Escrow, identity, and counterparty scoring are how the real agent economy gets measured and trusted as it grows.
