Cloudflare has opened a closed beta for a system that lets businesses charge AI agents for access to their sites and services. Called the Monetization Gateway, it sits between a website and the agents that visit it: when an agent requests data or a service, Cloudflare quotes a price and unlocks access once payment clears. The beta is limited to eligible U.S.-based buyers and sellers, with broader availability targeted for early 2027.
Highlights#
- Payments run in USDC, Circle's dollar-pegged stablecoin, on a pay-as-you-go basis — no human entering card details or holding a monthly subscription hostage to a one-off API call.
- Verification uses Coinbase's x402 standard, the payment protocol that lets websites charge software directly; transactions settle on Base, Coinbase's L2 network.
- The gateway builds on Cloudflare's August rollout of cloudflare.pay, which let agents prove they act for a user and spend from a linked wallet. The new layer answers the other half of the problem: giving merchants a meter to charge per request.
- Rohin Lohe, Cloudflare's product manager for the effort, says features and users will ramp through the rest of the year.
- The move tracks a wider field: MoonPay's agent wallet landed inside Grok last month, Robinhood opened agent purchases on its Gold card in May, and Circle, Stripe, and Tempo have all shipped agent-facing payment tools.
Why it matters#
Per-request stablecoin billing at the CDN edge is exactly the settlement rail machine-native commerce needs. The missing piece is what sits around the payment: proof of who the counterparty is, and recourse when a metered transaction goes wrong. That is the gap A2AWire closes with escrow-backed settlement and on-chain reputation on the same rails.
