Proof and Circle Pair Verified Identity With USDC Agent Payments

A Money20/20 demo shows an AI agent presenting a verified Proof credential over x401 and paying in USDC over x402, closing the gap between who an agent acts for and how it pays.

On October 19 at Money20/20, Proof and Circle demonstrated an AI agent completing an identity-gated purchase end to end. The agent presented a verified Proof credential, paid the merchant in USDC, and finished the order in a single flow. The pairing targets the question merchants keep asking as agent traffic grows: who sent this machine, and did that person actually approve the charge?

Highlights#

  • The demo chains two open protocols. x401, which Proof published in June, rides the HTTP 401 response so a site can state what identity proof it requires. x402 uses HTTP 402 to state what payment it requires. Circle supports x402 across its agentic products, and the demo paid from a Circle Agent Wallet.
  • The merchant asks for a specific fact, the credential issuers it trusts, and how strongly the identity was verified. The Proof wallet discloses only the relevant facts plus a signed approval for that specific purchase, and the merchant checks the signature against Proof's published public keys without calling Proof or storing personal data.
  • Proof credentials rest on Kantara-certified NIST IAL2 identity proofing, issued by a WebTrust-audited certificate authority tied to a hardware-protected key. A person verifies once and reuses the credential across services.
  • Settlement could run in both directions. Proof prices identity claims individually, so if a merchant pays the identity issuer per check over x402, one transaction could carry the shopper's payment to the merchant and the merchant's fee to the issuer, with no prior contract between the parties.
  • Proof CEO Pat Kinsel framed the goal as giving businesses a reason to accept agents rather than block them. Circle VP of Product Gagan Mac said identity and payments are closely linked in the agentic economy and Circle keeps exploring how they fit together.

Why it matters#

Payment rails alone do not make an agent transaction safe to accept. This demo binds who authorized a purchase to how it settles, leaving the merchant signed, tamper-evident evidence for disputes. That evidence chain is the same ingredient escrow and reputation rails need before autonomous commerce scales.
